Where should you post your articles…

It depends on your personal goal or goal you have setup for your business. If you want to build an expert name and reputation, then you need to publish our articles in popular newsletters and on topic-relevant highly-trafficked sites makes more sense.

In addition, you can get a good link from such a site to your site which is a good link-building tactic. However, if you are more interested in promoting your own site or blog, a better idea would be to post a full article on your own resource and place a short teaser (with a link to your article) in social networks and communities who share your interests.

How to become a trusted website
icon1 admin | icon2 Google, Internet Marketing, SEO Tips | icon4 09 30th, 2009| icon3Comments Off

There are a few things that you can do to show search engines that your website is trustworthy:

1. Get links from seed sites or from websites that are linked from seed sites

Seed sites are websites that are manually marked as trustworthy by the search engine owners. For example, if Apple.com has been chosen as a seed website by the search engine a link from Apple.com will have a positive effect on the TrustRank of your website. If Apple.com links to website X, website X links to website Y and website Y links to your website then your website will still get a good TrustRank.

2. Get an old domain name with a good domain history

The older your domain is, the better. If your domain has been online for several years, this is a signal that the website owner is serious about the site and it’s less likely that the domain is used for spamming purposes. Your domain name should not have changed the owner too often and it should not have been used for many different topics. Of course, it also should not have been used by spammers in the past.

3. Get links from related websites

Does your website get links from related websites and does it link to other related websites? Is your website a lonely island with no links from and to other websites or is it integrated in a network that deals with a special topic?

4. Don’t link to spam websites

You should not link to websites that are known spammers or to websites with dubious quality. If you link to such a website, you show search engines that you support them and that your own website should not be trusted too much.

5. Get many links from social networks

The more often your website is mentioned on social media websites, the more likely it is that your website is a trustworthy high quality website. The more votes your bookmarks on social media sites get, the better.

6. Offer good content and stay away from certain topics

It is not likely that a website that consists of only one page is an authority website. If your website has many pages that contain great content about a special topic then it is much easier to get a good TrustRank. If your website deals with a special topic, then it’s likely that it never will get a high TrustRank. These topics are the topics for which you receive the most spam emails.

If search engines trust your website, it is much easier to get high rankings

Search Engines: Who Owns Who
icon1 admin | icon2 Google, Internet Marketing | icon4 08 25th, 2009| icon3Comments Off

Who Owns Who

  • Yahoo! owns AllTheWeb, Lycos and AltaVista. Yahoo! also owns and uses Inktomi’s technology and database for all the partnering engines under its wing.
  • Google partners with AOL, it is also a major result provider for many large engines because of its own cutting-edge technology (Netscape, Ask.com, Iwon).
  • Live Search does not own anybody and uses its own database (since February, 2005).

A SEO company is just like any other company. There are good ones, and there are bad ones. You will mesh well with one, and not another. It is very important to find a company that you feel confident with and feel that they answer your questions satisfactorily and in a timely manner.

  1. Find out how long the SEO company has been in business.
  2. Do they have long-term satisfied clients?
  3. Ask to demonstrate their seo results.
  4. Ask potential Seo Company what type of reporting they provide.
  5. Ask if the SEO company you are interviewing provides ethical “whitehat” only solutions, and have them describe what SEO techniques that they plan on using.
  6. Avoid companies that email you with guarantees of page one results. They don’t own Google, and can’t make such a claim.
  7. How many hours will they put into working on your site?

You don’t have to be the SEO expert to choose the right search engine optimisation firm for your business.

You’ve probably heard about the Yahoo/Microsoft deal. This will have a major impact on the search engine landscape and there definitely will be effects on your website rankings and the number of visitors that your website will get.

The basic facts

Yahoo is going to give up their own search technology and use Microsoft’s search technology instead. Bing.com will power the organic and the paid search results on Yahoo (except for premium ads on Yahoo).

Self-serve advertising (i.e. the AdWords competitor) will be managed by Microsoft’s AdCenter. Microsoft will get access to Yahoo’s search technology and can use it to improve its own search technology.

What does this mean for your website?

1. You should optimize for Bing.com.

Yahoo/Bing will have a search market share of at least 15% (that’s the current market share of MSN and Yahoo combined – some statistics show a much higher market share). If you do not optimize some of your website pages for Bing, you’ll lose a lot of visitors and sales. Fortunately, IBP’s top 10 optimizer already enables you to optimize your website for Bing. The optimizer works with the US version of Bing as well as with many country versions. Recent research has shown that Bing’s traffic is more likely to convert.

2. Yahoo’s inbound link data will probably be lost.

Yahoo is the search engine that currently returns the most inbound link data. When Yahoo drops its index, that data will probably be lost. We recommend using IBP’s link manager if you want to get an overview of the websites that link to your website. The link manager in IBP will retrieve all links that are returned by Yahoo, Bing, Google and other search engines.

3. A big PPC provider will be gone, an even bigger provider will appear.

Microsoft will provide the search ads for Yahoo and Bing. Yahoo will close its own paid search offerings. That means that you will be able to manage your ads for both Yahoo and Bing in one user interface. It probably also means rising bid prices on Yahoo and Bing.

4. Yahoo might close some of their websites.

Yahoo might put its Internet directory into question as well as their alternative search applications SearchMonkey and SearchBOSS. Applications such as Yahoo Maps might also be reconsidered because Bing offers similar services.

5. There will be two independent search result pages.

Yahoo will have full control over the user interface of their search form. The ordering of the results, the layout and the whole search focus can be different from Bing. That means that you still might have to optimize your website for both search engines.

The deal still needs shareholder and legal approval. Yahoo and Microsoft hope that the changes will be in place by early 2010. If you want to participate from the change as soon as possible, you should optimize some of your web pages for Bing now.

Optimize different pages of your website for different search engines and different keywords. What works with one search engine might not work with another. Optimize each web page for a dedicated search engine/keyword combination to get better results.

There are several things that you can do to improve the conversion rate of your website:

1. Drive traffic to the most relevant pages on your website

Your website visitors should come to the most relevant pages on your website. If you advertise on Google AdWords for the search term “buy blue suede shoes” then your landing page should be a page about blue suede shoes and it should be possible to buy these shoes right on the page. The same applies for visitors that you get through your regular search engine rankings.

2. Check your website statistics for your pages with a high bounce rate

Analyze your website statistics to find pages on your site that have a high bounce rate. If too many people leave your website without fulfilling the desired task then you have to improve your pages and make them more relevant to the user’s query. Also check your statistics to find “404 not found” and other errors.

3. Add a call to action on all of your landing pages

Every landing page should contain a call to action. Chances are that a website visitor will see only a single page of your website. That’s why all pages should contain a call to action so that your website visitors know what to do.

Pay per click advertising has the ability to not only increase traffic to your site, but also increase the knowledge you have of your market. It can very quickly put money in your pocket or very quickly take it out.

Opening up a paid search account, adding a method of payment, and letting traffic flow only takes a few minutes. After that, the most common problem is simply not knowing where to go from there.

Here are eight mistakes that most often turn what could be an otherwise successful campaign into a pure nightmare.

1. Using large non-targeted broad keyword lists.

Large lists of non targeted keywords generally attract non targeted visitors. Rather than focusing on these massive lists (sometimes referred to as keyword dumps) you should focus on smaller more targeted lists. In addition, refrain from using “broad match” keyword types without any offsetting negative keywords. The use of alternative match options will likely yield less traffic, but that traffic should be more qualified.

2. Paying too much attention to your CTR and not enough on your Conversion Rate.

CTR (or Click Through Rate) means nothing if that traffic does not produce actions (sales in the case of ecommerce sites). Focusing on CTR only as an indicator of paid search success will only end up costing you money in the end (thus the “pay per click” concept.) Instead pay more attention to your paid search Conversion Rate to get a better idea of whether you are moving in the right direction or not.

3. Not looking at your Value per Visitor in relation to your Avg. CPC.

Your Value per Visitor represents the amount of revenue you earn for each visitor that arrives at your website through a paid search click. Your Avg. CPC (Average Cost per Click) is the amount you spend on average to get one visitor to your site. Comparing the two tells you whether you are making money or not.

If your Avg. CPC is less than your Value per Visitor then you are making money. The further the two numbers are apart, the more money you are making. It goes without saying that if your Avg. CPC is more than your Value per Visitor then you are losing money.

4. Using only one Ad Group for multiple sets of non-related keywords.

Setting up only one Ad Group and loading it with multiple sets of non-related keywords does a number of bad things. It restricts your ability to more accurately target your visitors based on ad copy. It can cause your quality score to suffer. It costs you more money and also can cost you ad position. I’ll sum it up as follows: using one ad group will often result in non-targeted traffic at a higher cost with a lower ad position in the results. This is on way to succeed at paid search.

5. Using only one ad copy variation per ad group.

I see it often. Website owners running paid search and only using one ad to generate traffic. To be successful and find out what really converts, you should use at least two different variations of ad copy per ad group – and that’s only a gauge. Three to four different ad variations is even better.

Running different ads against each other across one ad group helps you learn what triggers your market to act and furthermore what triggers them to buy. It enables you to test what works and what doesn’t so you can zero in on higher conversion rates.

6. Not turning off Content Network at the start of a campaign.

Until you know what you are doing, one of the first things you should do to save yourself some money is to turn off the “Content Network” option (on by default).

Traffic from the content network typically converts at a much lower rate than traffic generated through the search network. There are ways to increase that content network conversion figure (combining placement targeting with proper landing pages is an example) but it takes a lot of time to get it right. The longer you leave the Content Network turned on, the more money you’ll likely spend and the lower your paid search conversion rate will go.

7. Not setting a Daily Budget.

If you don’t set a daily budget you’re opening yourself up to unexpected charges and possible wasted advertising dollars. The easiest way to set a budget is to come up with the amount you are willing to invest in advertising per month and then take that amount divided it by 30 or 31 (days in a month). Then allocated that daily advertising spend across the number of campaigns you have. This does not ensure the most “visible” campaign, but it will ensure you rarely exceed your budget.

8. Running all paid search traffic to a single landing page.

Driving all the traffic your paid search receives to a single landing page (i.e. the home page) is going to typically result in less than desirable conversion rates. The better method is to set the destination url at the individual keyword level to allow more control over where traffic is routed.

How SEO (search engine optimization) can save your online marketing campaign. I know, only SOME people are saying we’re in a recession, but for heavens sake, what does it take to just admit it?

Many local businesses are trying desperately to figure out how the current recession will be impacting their company. Some small businesses are taking a pre-emptive route and by reviewing their expenses, to see where they can cut down on spending. Unfortunately many businesses are choosing their marketing budget to be cut.

If your business has been considering cutting marketing and advertising dollars, or already has, I strongly urge you to consider putting the money still allotted towards search engine optimization (SEO) of your website. SEO is a very inexpensive form of advertising, yet highly effective for getting targeted traffic to your website (and through your website your customers will receive information on your products and services).

Let me give you 3 ways that SEO can help with marketing in a recession.

1)  Today many consumers are looking for bargains and “the best buy”. So, words like “discounted”, “cheaper”, “low prices”, and “sale” attract more customers. Do you have any pages on your website marketing these phrases? The beauty of internet marketing (and websites) is that you can make changes like this by adding and/or modifying pages on your website and make them available almost immediately. Most importantly, you can display these messages in the description for the link to your website in the search engines, making people choose your site over others.

2)  SEO can help your business find additional keywords to products or services you are offering that potential customers are searching for. How? A big aspect of SEO is searching for internet trends, and finding how many people a month are looking for your business’s chosen keywords. In other words, what words are being used on Internet searches? Let’s say your business provides local boat cruises for a variety of services. However, in the past 12 months it is revealed that there is a considerable increase for people searching for dinner cruises in your area. Your website can utilize that information, making your site more readily visible for the more searched term. Basically, find out what your audience is looking for and then give it to them.

3)  When your website is optimized, part of the ongoing maintenance from the SEO firm is analyzing the statistics from the website. This means finding what keywords the majority of the visitors coming to your site are using, how long visitors are staying on the site, which pages are being viewed the most and longest, and much more. With all this information the necessary changes can be made to your website, allowing ever continuing improvement to your site and searchablity.

Many website owners make the great mistake of believing that once they have a website and have it optimized they are done. Even more tragically some business owners think they only need a website and don’t even know about SEO! I cannot begin to tell you how big of a misconception that is. The trick to a successful website is keeping it constantly updated. Websites are not brochures, so they should not be treated as such. Constant improvements will keep your website up to date and more search engine friendly (aka Google will want to rank you higher).

If you are already receiving SEO services for your web presence, contact your SEO provider to see if they are providing you with the needed services. If you are not optimized with SEO I highly suggest getting started today!  Now is the time to get optimized!
