How SEO (search engine optimization) can save your online marketing campaign. I know, only SOME people are saying we’re in a recession, but for heavens sake, what does it take to just admit it?

Many local businesses are trying desperately to figure out how the current recession will be impacting their company. Some small businesses are taking a pre-emptive route and by reviewing their expenses, to see where they can cut down on spending. Unfortunately many businesses are choosing their marketing budget to be cut.

If your business has been considering cutting marketing and advertising dollars, or already has, I strongly urge you to consider putting the money still allotted towards search engine optimization (SEO) of your website. SEO is a very inexpensive form of advertising, yet highly effective for getting targeted traffic to your website (and through your website your customers will receive information on your products and services).

Let me give you 3 ways that SEO can help with marketing in a recession.

1)  Today many consumers are looking for bargains and “the best buy”. So, words like “discounted”, “cheaper”, “low prices”, and “sale” attract more customers. Do you have any pages on your website marketing these phrases? The beauty of internet marketing (and websites) is that you can make changes like this by adding and/or modifying pages on your website and make them available almost immediately. Most importantly, you can display these messages in the description for the link to your website in the search engines, making people choose your site over others.

2)  SEO can help your business find additional keywords to products or services you are offering that potential customers are searching for. How? A big aspect of SEO is searching for internet trends, and finding how many people a month are looking for your business’s chosen keywords. In other words, what words are being used on Internet searches? Let’s say your business provides local boat cruises for a variety of services. However, in the past 12 months it is revealed that there is a considerable increase for people searching for dinner cruises in your area. Your website can utilize that information, making your site more readily visible for the more searched term. Basically, find out what your audience is looking for and then give it to them.

3)  When your website is optimized, part of the ongoing maintenance from the SEO firm is analyzing the statistics from the website. This means finding what keywords the majority of the visitors coming to your site are using, how long visitors are staying on the site, which pages are being viewed the most and longest, and much more. With all this information the necessary changes can be made to your website, allowing ever continuing improvement to your site and searchablity.

Many website owners make the great mistake of believing that once they have a website and have it optimized they are done. Even more tragically some business owners think they only need a website and don’t even know about SEO! I cannot begin to tell you how big of a misconception that is. The trick to a successful website is keeping it constantly updated. Websites are not brochures, so they should not be treated as such. Constant improvements will keep your website up to date and more search engine friendly (aka Google will want to rank you higher).

If you are already receiving SEO services for your web presence, contact your SEO provider to see if they are providing you with the needed services. If you are not optimized with SEO I highly suggest getting started today!  Now is the time to get optimized!

Pay per click (PPC) advertising has expanded rapidly as a way to very selectively target customers. This is a look at PPC marketing and how to use it to your best advantage.

Why Use PPC?
When administered properly, PPC advertising has the following advantages:

* Targeted customers are coming to you and are searching for the topics you have selected.
* Advertisers only pay when a potential client actually clicks on their ad.
* Campaigns can be set up and edited almost instantly.

Disadvantages of PPC:

* Fraud, such as competitors clicking on your ads to increase your costs, can be a problem.
* Costs are increasing as PPC becomes more popular and competitive.

Impressions and Click Through
The first goal of PPC adverting is for your ad impressions (how often your ads appear in search engines) to generate clicks. This is called the click through ratio (CTR). Test the appeal of your ads by rotating them (most PPC services offer advertisers the option of displaying more than one ad).

Conversion Ratio
For your PPC campaign to be cost effective, you must also consider your conversion ratio (the amount of clicks that actually lead to sales). Watch your conversion ratio to measure exactly what kind of return you are getting for your advertising dollar. Keep track of your CTR costs, conversion ratio profits and adjust your campaign accordingly.

Low Conversion Ratio
If your conversion ratio is low, you might consider adding more specific wording to your ads to weed out those who might not be interested in or able to purchase your product before they click. You can also set your ads to appear only in certain geographic regions or at times where you have found higher conversion ratios. Finally, it may be necessary to redesign your site or consider if your product is really practical to sell through PPC.

Ad Positioning
PPC campaigns work like auctions with advertisers bidding for top positions. The CTR is much higher for ads within the top three listings and drops dramatically after the first page. The second listing is considered best by many advertisers because the top spot often generates many impulsive clicks that have a poor conversion ratio.

Advertisers occasionally drop out and the price of tops bids can sometimes decrease. Periodically check your bids to ensure you are not paying any more than needed.

Long Tail Keywords
Long tail keywords are specific chains of keywords that people sometimes search for. For example, instead of software, a long tail keyword that people might use in searches could be “keyword finding software”. If you are selling software that does this, it would be wise to bid on a phrase like that instead of just “software” since you will likely get a lower price and more targeted customers. Target your most effective keywords with the most ad money.

Content Network
If you use the content network in your PPC campaign, your ads will also appear on other websites. These ads are generally less effective than ads that appear on search engine result pages and should have lower bids.

In Summary:

* Keep track of your bids to insure you are at the optimal position and price for your budget.
* Use long tail keywords for lower bids and more focused clicks.
* Try different ads for best CTR and target them to appear at the best times and geographic areas for your product.
* Use the conversion ratio to keep track of your sales and weigh the results against your costs.
* Ads with more specific wording may reduce your CTR but increase your sales/clicks ratio.
* Remember content network ads are generally less effective than those that appear in search engine results.
* Back the best keywords and ads with the most money.

While PPC offers many opportunities, advertisers must carefully monitor their campaigns to avoid the pitfalls and get the best possible return on their advertising investment.

I get tired of so many people saying how the search engines change all the time, that it’s so difficult to keep up. I just read a post the other day, a posted claiming SEO was dead (don’t get me started on the “death of” threads). The poster went on to say how many SEO companies doing the work and months later still not showing in the SERPs. Course I’d have to wonder what the heck they were doing in the first place. One reasoning given was that directories don’t work for link backs any more, they don’t have the “power”. Weak, but never the less a theory.

We all know the Net is changing at lightening speed, we have to adapt to the changes. The same goes for surfer habits. Where are they these days? They are not browsing directories, they don’t have the time, they are to busy yucking it up on their favorite social network. Only stands to reason what sites now have the control. But some habits die hard, and some folks don’t like change or are stuck in a rut. SEO still works, the scale has just tipped in another direction.

In reality the search engines don’t change for those using proper SEO techniques. They change for those trying to buck the system, the spammers and blackhatters. Tricks and cheats stop working sooner or later. They are short lived.I’ve said it many times, doing it right, still works today just as it did years ago. We just need to adapt to the changes and realize there is a whole heck of a lot more competition.
