Website search engine optimization is a pretty intimidating term. A lot of small online start ups, run by people like you, with far too many new things to learn already, all too quickly walk away from SEO. And that’s a problem, because not only do you need to learn about it, the truth is that it’s really not all that hard.

So let’s start by stripping away a little bit of the smoke that’s floating around SEO for small business websites. After all, SEO is really nothing more than a series of steps that will help you to put your website in front of your potential customers. And that’s the real magic it’s a series of many steps. In fact, there are so many different steps you can make and different things that you can do, to make an impact on where your site appears on a search, it’s hard to know where to start.

Because there are so many steps you can take to help your search engine rankings, a huge industry has been built up around SEO services. Naturally every company that calls to offer you their services will offer the single most important service to vault you to the top of the rankings. At least that’s what they’ll tell you. With every pitch you hear, it becomes harder and harder to figure out what to do.

So start with keywords. And by that, I mean understand what keywords or keyword phrases people who are looking to buy what you have to sell will use to find you. In other words, “What would you type into a search engine query if you were looking to buy your own product on the internet?” (and don’t for one short second think that they’re going to type in the name of your company or site – at least not for a long, long time.) Hopefully, you already considered this before you started your website and you are already sure that there actually ARE people on the internet looking to buy what you have to sell.

Now – different pages on your site will be relying on different keywords to attract traffic. For example – if you’re selling pet supplies, you’ll probably have your site organized either by pets (a main dog page/ cat page/ bird page/ etc) or by products (a food page/bed page/ toy page) and likely it will be a combination of both words (dog beds, bird toys, etc.). If you’re a business consultant then you’ll probably have you site organized by either, the verticals or the business types you serve and/or the services you offer.

Each one of these main category pages will have 3-5 keywords or keyword phrases of its own. So, your first step is to determine what your category page keywords will be – not your home page keywords, your category page keywords. Too many new start ups put all their emphasis on driving traffic to the home page and that’s a mistake. By definition, your category pages will be more focused on a single subject. Each will be more relevant to that subject, with more content on that subject and these are important factors in helping your page do well in the search results. Identify 3-5 keywords or keyword phrases that will work for each of your main category pages. From now on, change your thinking from what you’re going to do to get your site to rank well on a search, to what you’re going to do to get one page on your site to rank well. You’ll be found on the internet, one page at a time.

It’s easy to overspend on marketing services to increase site traffic, but with patience and effort, many small businesses can do some good marketing all on their own

Achieving high  SEO rankings through search engine optimization is generally regarded as a long term marketing strategy. What most people don’t realise is there are plenty of niche’s online with low competition where you could achieve first page google in a short amount of time. It ultimately comes down to using the correct techniques and following a system to conquer SEO.

Here’s 5 techniques you can use to dominate SEO rankings in your niche:

1.  Keyword Density. Almost everyone has a different opinion on which is the best keyword density to use. Another question you need to ask yourself, is “What type of web content am I targeting?” If you’re looking at developing your own website, you might want to consider a density of at least 3%. Compare this to an article where there may be more restrictions on the density you can use.

2.  Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI). If you’ve ever looked at how some of the top expert authors write their articles, you’ll notice that they are jam packed with keywords. Not necessarily the same word but loads of different words that relate to their main keyword. Search engines factor in the relevance of a web page by checking how well the keywords relate to each other.

3.  Target a different keyword for each web page. When developing your own website, one of the keys to high SEO rankings is to target a specific word per web page you have displaying on your site. You might have 10 different pages accessible on your website and if each is based around it’s own individual keyword you have a much higher chance of achieving a first page Google ranking.

4.  Choosing the right domain name. Always be sure to include your main keyword in your domain name. If your having trouble thinking of a domain name, try adding some of these words to the end of your wanted domain (elite, plus, edge).

5.  Sitemapping. A sitemap is basically a blueprint of your entire website easily accessible to the search engines. The best location for this is on your root domain so just after the .com. Having a sitemap in place will allow your website to get indexed much faster. It’s important to include Meta Taggs when creating a sitemap, to fully utilize your search engine exposure and gain best SEO rankings.

Internet Marketing skills can be very valuable to local, brick-and-mortar businesses. If a local business owner wants to develop an effective Web presence, but doesn’t know how, you could be the answer to his or her prayers.

The key is to avoid some basic mistakes that “IM” types tend to make when first approaching businesses in their locale:

  1. Don’t expect a sale the first time you talk to a business owner. You need to develop some rapport. After all, you’re a consultant, not a “salesman”.
  2. Steer clear of having a “package” of services that you tout almost immediately. Don’t make the newbie mistake of having solutions in search of problems. Find out what the problem is first.
  3. Don’t think that you’re wasting your time if the owner wants to talk at length about his or her business. You’ll be able to mine nuggets of information from this kind of freewheeling talk.
  4. Avoid using “IM” speak. The jargon, catchwords and methods you know so well are going to be foreign to practically all local business owners. Ever try to explain what you do online to your friends and family? It’s even worse with a business owner whose eyes just glazed over!
  5. Don’t forget to ask for a referral, even if you can’t help this particular business. Some folks just don’t have the need for an online presence. However, they may be the type who talk frequently with other business owners. Make sure they think you are remarkable – and remark about you frequently!
  6. Don’t badmouth their website, no matter how horrible it is! Once you open a dialogue about their Web presence, you can find tactful ways to explain how a clean, simple, attractive Web page will do more for the business than the one that’s up there. Keep in mind, a family member or friend may have done the work. Don’t insult that person!

Here’s one simple “do” — find out how this person got into business and be genuinely interested in the answer. This will lead to understanding the business’s sales process, business plan, most profitable merchandise/services, any underused capacity and what causes the most aggravation.

In fact, that’s the biggest “don’t”. Don’t promote that which causes aggravation for the owner!

Learn to view your efforts as a local business consultant as a process, not a series of one-and-done sales. You’ll be glad you did!

A Google Webmaster Help thread asks if there is a limit on the number of Sitemap files you can have under a single Google account. Currently, there is no documentation on the limit but there is a 500 limit per Webmaster Tools account. Google’s, JohnMu said, “As it is, the current limit is 500 Sitemap files per account.” But John added a way to get around this limit. John said:

“You can get around this limit by including your Sitemap files in Sitemap Index files (with 500 websites/account, you could use a single Sitemap Index file per site to cover all of them), by submitting Sitemap files via HTTP ping or by submitting them via robots.txt files. If you decide to use Sitemap Index files, you should still be able to drill down to the individual Sitemap files through Webmaster Tools, so that you can get feedback on them separately.

Verifying success in search engine optimization can be done by adding four components together

Indexation + Backlink +  Rankings +  Traffic and Revenue = Seo Success

Indexation
will determine if a search engine has properly identified all of your site’s pages. Indexation is the first critical step to natural search performance. Pages that aren’t indexed have zero chance of ranking in the search engines

Backlink
will show the number of internal and external links that point to your site as a whole.  Generally, the more external links that point to your site, the higher your site will rank in natural search results.

Rankings
will show where in the natural search results your site appears for given search words or phrases.

Traffic and revenue
will show the keywords used to find your site, revenue generated per keyword, the percentage of visitors that purchased products or services and so forth.

Seo: Is CSS spam?
icon1 admin | icon2 SEO Tips | icon4 03 15th, 2009| icon3No Comments »

There is no evidence that search engines notice when you use CSS to define your page layout. In fact, adjusting your page’s visual look with CSS won’t be defined as spamming unless you try to use “display:none“, “visibility:hidden” or similar definitions to hide sections stuffed with keywords. Such actions are definitely spamming and are not recommended.

But still CSS layout techniques should be used cautiously. If we examine closely the <div> tag it should be said that search engines don’t like to index hidden context. Try to avoid the excessive use of this tag as your intentions are most likely going to be interpreted as spam.

One more crucial thing – use HTML tags for their intended purpose. E.g., you shouldn’t use CSS to change the function of the tag if you don’t use it. There are classes instead.

The usage of CSS reduces to a minimum the size of the HTML code and provides the best opportunity to effectively use keywords in important HTML heading tags (h1, h2, etc.). But  remember – the time when CSS was invisible to search engines has gone by. Today’s engines can easily read cascading style sheets and thus they are aware of what they once were not!

Optimizing web pages for search engines does not mean creating special pages for search engines. Optimizing web pages for search engines is often the same as optimizing web pages for web surfers. If you do it correctly, your website will be attractive to both web surfers and search engine spiders. The following list shows 6 factors that can improve the usability of your website as well as your search engine rankings.

1. You should have fast loading web pages
2. Your web pages should be easy to read
3. The contents of your web pages should be clearly arranged
4. Your web page images should use the IMG ALT attribute
5. You should use custom 404 not found error pages
6. Your website should be easy to navigate

No.  The biggest concern for search engine companies like Google and Yahoo is finding content that will bring them more traffic ( and thus more advertising revenue). In other words, their result must be relevant. Relevant result makes for a good search engine; irrelavant result makes for a short-lived search engine.

Most search engines these days return two types of results whenever you click Search:

Natural/Organic – The ‘real’ search results. The results that most users are looking for and which take up most of the window. For most searches, the search engine displays a long list of links to sites with content which is related to the word you searched for. These results are ranked according to how relevant and important they are.

Paid – Pure advertising. This is how the search engines make their money. Advertisers pay the search engines to display their ad whenever someone searches for a word which is related to their product or service. These ads look similar to the natural search results, but are normally labeled “Sponsored Links”, and normally take up a smaller portion of the window.

Google is able to detect unnatural linking patterns. That is why the following type of links don’t work:

1. Link farms and automated linking systems
Some online services promise hundreds of links in a short time with no work involved. All you have to do is to put some code on your website or to join a system that will help you to get links from other sites quickly and easily. These automated linking systems don’t work and Google can detect them. Actually, Google thinks that you’re spamming if you participate in such a system and they might penalize your website by lowering its position in the search results.

2. Paid links
Google’s anti-spam guru Matt Cutts has made clear that Google considers paid links spam. If you don’t want to lose your rankings on Google, you should be very careful when buying links.

How to get the best links to your website ? If your website is only a collection of affiliate links then you cannot expect that other websites will link to your site. Create a website with good content. The more interesting your web pages are, the easier it is to get links from other websites.
