Use of H1 Tags in SEO
icon1 seodeals.com.au | icon2 search engine optimisation | icon4 07 27th, 2009| icon3Comments Off

By Alan L Smith

H1 tags are one of the most important part of SEO which is the header tag situated in body of a website. It can be termed as the most simple form of header found on a web page. Through h1 tags search engines come to know about the site content details. If its used in proper co-ordination with anchor text and title tag then you can even expect increased density of website traffic from major search engines like Yahoo, MSN and Google.

Although the feature of h1 tags is not new and is present since years, but from last few years its significance has grown due to increased demand by Google. It carries much more importance than keyword meta tag and description meta tag. The best position to place these H1 tags is at the header situated above the content. Experts recommend to exclude the HREF links from the tag. When you keep a link in h1 tag, it gives the impression to the search engines that the linked web page is more important rather than the present page.

Those desiring to keep a descriptive link to their own page can use the link along with proper anchor text including content of that particular web page. The tags produced by h1 are of largest form, and are very important requiring to be used independently having same HTML commands.

They also consists of same attributes having higher level of suitability like the Class, Align and ID attributes. Always keep the header tag at the top of the web page. You should know this that- when Google scans a web page, it goes from top left to the bottom right of the page. Search engines generally view websites from text perspective instead of graphical point of view.

Place the h1 header tag on the top left hand side or middle part of your web page, as here the main content is found. You can even use the h1 header tag as the title for the content present on that particular page.

You can also construct sub-keywords having same heading tags. In order to separate the text in the tags they are made BOLD, thus they get separated from other text on the page.

Usually search engines are in the search of important and authentic text on the web pages. And when h1 tags are used, they are considered signifying anything important thus giving more visibility to the heading tags.

How to Get Listed on Page 1 of Search Engines

How to optimize your web pages to become search engine friendly? First, you need to work on HTML elements like Title tag, H1, H2, H3, Meta Descriptions, Meta Keywords, Alt tags for images, links, and link texts are also very important. Second, try to get quality links from reputable websites (with high PageRank) and only relative websites. Third, start blogging with new and fresh contents at least one article a day to build readers base and spiders to come back more frequently.

Remember don’t overload your web page with keywords. Just use important keywords and phrases that make sense. Make sure it’s readable by search engines as well as humans.

The Title Tag is the title of the web page. If you use web browser like Internet Explorer or Firefox, it shows up on top of the window.

For example, one of our blogs How To Promote Your Dating Site, you see “How to promote your dating site?” Each web page should have different Title Tag to describe the page. You can use a few keywords in there.

H1 is the most important heading, that is what you see “How to promote your dating site?” It should be the first title inside the page body, which can be similar to Title Tag. Then you can use H2, H3 if needed. You usually have one H1 and multiple H2 and H3.

There are many ways to build back links. However, it’s time consuming and requires lot of hard work. You can:

- submit articles to directories
- create ehow articles
- send press releases (like Lisa mentioned about PRWeb)
- submit your website to related websites (for dating, it will be dating directories)
- use social media like technorati, delicious, stumble upon, twitter, etc-
- create profile on social networking sites and add your website link
- create wiki
- create videos (submit to YouTube, etc)
- submit to Google local business center
- participate in forums (related)
- comment on blogs
- help others in Questions and Answers and post resources link
- link exchange (which does not work well because of two way links)
- paid banner ad
- paid link
- provide useful/free stuffs or info on your site, and people will link to you (automatically)

by doing all these, it will help to increase your ranking and traffic of your website.

Using SEO, search engine optimization, and keyword research is a rather simple and reproducible way to start making money on the internet. Let’s look at the basics that every internet marketer worth their salt goes through.

Step 1: Get into the mind of your buyer -You can start by thinking about the overall intent and motivation of your potential buyer. Can you think about what questions they are asking? What are they trying to do? You should use all these questions and start doing some keyword research.

Remember that you get 2 types of buyers. The first is a more analytical thinker and tends to ask many how and what questions. How to make money online? What is the fastest way to make money? What is the safest way to start an online business? How do I get traffic?

Other prospects are more emotional and relational in their approach. Spontaneous and humanistic types are concerned with the experience and the results: best selling money ebook, most successful online business, internet marketing for newbies.

Start thinking like your potential customer Nearly all people want to make easy money and many people want to make money online. However, not all people want to start a business. So you would rather use the words that people use who want to make money, even though they probably have to start an online business to do so. Knowing where they are in the buying process will help you convert traffic into sales easier.

Step 2: Now start thinking a little wider -You can use a keyword analysing tool like Wordtracker Keyword Universe. You could use the keywords from step 1 and get more options by using the thesaurus option. Get some wider and broader terms around ‘make money online’. Make sure that the new keyword phrases comply with the theme of your website, something in the line of ‘get rich quick’, start a home business’ and ‘work from home’. Just remember to include the buyer keywords, because quality keywords are worth more than many crappy keywords.

Step 3: Prioritize your keywords -When you prioritize your keywords you should look at how strong a buyer keywords it is as well as how much traffic it will bring. If your product represents enough value the buyer keywords you use will convert your website traffic into sales. Remember its fine to use keyword phrases that bring in low volumes of traffic with high money making potential. Optimise your pages and content for these long tail keyword phrases and you’re sure to impress the search engines to no end. So answer your customers’ questions and they will do the converting for you.

Due to fierce competition it’s not so easy getting on Google’s first page for single or popular keywords anymore. Incorporating long tail keywords in your everyday search engine optimization, or SEO, is a strategy that will still get you results and traffic. Keyword phases that contain more then one word to make up a keyword are also called long tail keywords. Here are some shining examples of multiple keyword phrases:

* long tail keyword search
* multiple keyword phrase marketing
* what is a multiple keyword phrase (It’s a question, but still a multiple keyword phrase)

Here are some benefits when using multiple keywords in your writing and marketing:

* The traffic you get is free; you only spend some time doing the research
* A lot of your marketing has already been done as the traffic you get is already focused
* The conversion rate from long tail keyword searches tend to be higher, both in click through rate and in sales
* The competition on multiple keywords is less then for single word keywords
* The search engines will rank you higher for that phrase then for a single keyword, simply due to this competition

Probably the simplest way to long tail keyword development is simply just to write about a specific subject extensively. What we did with our site is to write a whole series of articles about traffic generation. Keyword research was discussed in one entry. Keyword links in another. The search engine optimization article naturally flowed into the SEO spider likes and dislikes article.

All these articles are different, but they hover around the same concept. Long tail keyword development happens very naturally when you discuss a broader subject like traffic generation. This is simply because you have to speak the same language, use the same keyword phrases if you will, to get the whole message across.

I suggest you start off with some initial keyword phrase research for some sort of foundation. Multiple keyword research, the other name for long tail keyword research, is in fact very similar to normal keyword research. Let’s use Google Keyword Tool and do an initial search for ‘keyword’. Have a look at all the results, for now just look.

If you look at the left of the Google Keyword Tool page you will see a bar indicating the competition for that specific keyword or keyword phrase. And that’s the beauty of long tail keywords. In general the longer the tail of that multiple keyword phrase, the less competitive you have to be on that phrase. Compare the search for ‘get traffic with article marketing’ with the simpler keyword phrase ‘get traffic’. Which one do you think will bring a more focused visitor to your site? The bulk volume of searches is also important. Try to find a long tail keyword phrase with high volume and low competition.

It would be a good idea to get a heap of variations on the same keyword phrase and save them on file. Once you start writing your website or article on a specific subject make sure that you sprinkle those 3 to 4 word keyword phrases all over your content. Then you write another entry on a related subject and use some of the related long tail keywords. You will eventually get ranked by the search engines and this will then get you more website traffic.

It always surprises me when I see websites where images are either ignored, or undervalued, or both. Really, your traffic will come in flowing if you follow these simple steps and make sure your images meet the basic search engine requirements.

Every standards-compliant, Google-sensitive image reference should contain these five key items:

1. A src (source) attribute specifying the destination URL of the image
2. A width declaration where the width of the image is specified in pixels
3. A height declaration where the height of the image is specified in pixels
4. An alt (alternative text) attribute that describes the content of the image
5. A title attribute that contains text to be displayed when the user hovers the mouse over the image

So, the ideal XHTML image reference would look like this:

<img title=”Sample Image of Sample”
alt=”Sample image of sample something” width=”220″ height=”212″/>

Now, you probably still have questions, so here are some Q&As:

1. Do all the images need to be in one folder?
Yes. The entire folder will be crawled even if just one image in on the page. It is not, however, it’s a good idea to include page components that are images (i.e. borders, dividers, etc.) in a separate folder.

2. Do I need a sitemap for images?
No. I actually double-checked with Google and the answer is definitely no. If you include direct image URLs in sitemap, Google won’t index the images because they do not index the images directly, but rather index the page on which the image appears.
Rather, make sure the image folder is not blocked by your robots.txt.

3. Does image file name matter?
It does. Also, use dashed between words, rather than underscores. Originally, alt text was introduced to improve the usability for people using plain text browsers. So, it is a safe assumption that if a plain text browser does not see the image information in text format, neither will the search engine crawler.

4. Do I need to use a caption by the image?
Yes. Placing a small caption directly under, on top, or on the side of the image will help the search engine see what the image is about, and with a caption, you can be more descriptive about the image.

5. Should I monitor the number of Google images indexed?
Yes! Simply type on http://www.images.google.com?q=site:yoursite.com

Also, check out the Google Image Labeler http://images.google.com/imagelabeler/ which allows you to label images already indexed by Google better.

PPC Search Engine Optimisation

PPC search engine optimization isn’t something that a lot of people think of when they think of Ardan Michael Blum. Blum is better known for being an expert on on page and code optimization, but the principles of SEO can equally be applied to PPC advertising. In such a highly competitive and costly method of marketing it pays to get every strategic advantage you can.

Ardan Michael Blum is one of the pioneers of search engine optimization and an expert who guarantees his clients first page rankings for Google and Yahoo in record time. These sort of promises aren’t ones to be made lightly and as and SEO will know, getting onto the first page of the SERPs can be a difficult and unpredictable process. So can SEO really apply to PPC campaign optimization?

PPC is a little different that search engine marketing in the traditional sense where webmasters fight over the first spots on the search engine results pages by optimizing their text and backlinks to gain relevance and authority. The fundamental difference lies in the fact that PPC marketing is a paid placement service where essentially the highest bid secures the highest spot. But this is not exactly true and many first placed PPC ads are ranking higher than competitors with bigger bids.

The reason for this is that the landing pages for these highly placed PPC ads are perfectly optimized for the keywords that are being bid on. This perfect alignment between ad and landing page improves the quality score for the ads and Google rewards a high quality score with better overall performance and cheaper clicks. This is one of the secrets to successful PPC campaigns – being able to rank high and pay low.

With PPC advertising becoming increasingly effective it’s important to focus on PPC search engine optimization and heed experts like Ardan Michael Blum. The more you do the more money you can make online and the sooner you can achieve your online business dreams. Whatever they may be.

Believe it or not, the key to unlocking search engine optimization and marketing success is keywords and phrases. Unfortunately, many businesses and new internet marketers make the mistake of using only keywords that they can come up with off the top of their head, or keyword phrases used heavily in their industry or niche.

The problem with this is that everyone else in your industry and niche is using the same keywords and phrases. In order to rise above the competition, you are going to either have to fork out a lot of cash, or find new and fresh keywords for your search engine optimization and marketing efforts.

The best way to do this is through keyword research tools, which can be found online in many locations. These tools allow you to enter a keyword or phrase, and receive back many combinations and additional uses of those keywords. You will also receive general information about how often that keyword is searched. These web based software are free, although you can receive additional features and information for a fee.

When choosing which of these keywords you want to employ in your search engine optimization and marketing, think about the fact that the more popular a keyword is, the more you have to pay for pay-per-click sponsored advertising and the harder it will be to break through into the search results. However, if you choose keywords with the lowest searches you will not receive much traffic. Choose words somewhere in the middle for best results. And don’t only do this activity once-you are not the only one using keyword research for optimization, and the words you use now may be more popular later.

A search engine optimization friendly website means developing a site which is ready to start an SEO campaign.  Whether your website is dynamic or static it can easily get indexed on the search engine if best optimization practices are followed.

You can check if this on your website.

•    Page construction – This will provide full support to standard on-page elements like titles, headings and Meta tags. Although these variables are of not much importance but without them the site will not have any standard as compared to the top ranking sites.

•    Content – If we talk about keyword relevancy, link popularity and content are the two major ranking factors.  It is necessary for an SEO friendly website to have enough content and link popularity in comparison to other competitor sites to fall into the “relevant site” category.

•    Configuration – Besides this, web server configuration is another thing you should take care of.  If your website is not  friendly, the first goal should be to make it ready for a successful SEO campaign. Any site could have problems in site architecture, page construction, content, web server configuration and related areas. Make sure to check out all these factors before finally hosting a website.

The success of a website on the Internet depends on the SEO friendliness of its content. An SEO friendly website needs sufficient planning and expertise. If you have comprehensive understanding of search engine optimization methods, it will be of great help in implementing the SEO strategies in the right way.

We all know that SEO is one of the most powerful ways to market a website and we all know that a huge amount of our SEO time is used creating links back to our sites in order to rank higher primarily on Google. Link building effectively is a skill learned through experience, in fact most of the time it is through trial and error, however there is one fundamental aspect we all should be aware of and that is building links to deep pages as well as our home pages.

Building links to deep pages helps to build a domains authority and will assist you in ranking for your targeted keywords. If a domain had all it’s links pointing at 1 page, Google would consider the other pages to be of no value, if this is the case they will not get indexed and any links on them to other areas of our site will count for nothing.

So now we know how important these deep links are, we also need to know how to acquire them, as building links to deep pages can prove quite difficult for some websites. The problem is that Google require natural links and not many webmasters are going to link back to web pages that are commercial in their context. Therefore we should be looking to create an area on our site that can and will attract links. A blog is a great way to do this by publishing relevant quality content designed to help the reader instead of sell to them.

Once we have somewhere to put this content we need to ensure the content is structured well, easy to read and not overly long. Huge articles with few breaks tend to turn readers off and this will also prevent them linking to the content. Attempt to write an exclusive story or if you are not in the position to do so try to be contentious about some other news that is current, however make sure you back up any arguments you make.

Social media is a huge part of SEO now and having social media links below your articles are a must to encourage readers to share your content. Surfers tend to be lazy so make it obvious you want them to spread your content around the web. Blog carnivals are another great way to create links to deep pages, anchored with your preferred text. Submit articles once a week and you should see a steady flow of links coming back to deep pages.
